Why Preparation is the Most Important Part of Any Decorating Job

Most people think decorating is about the paint. In my experience (over 40 years of it) it's about what happens before the paint goes on.

Proper preparation is the difference between a finish that looks good for years and one that starts to peel, crack, or show through within months. It's also the part that's easiest to skip if you're in a hurry or cutting corners, which is why it's often where cheaper jobs fall down.

Good prep typically involves filling any cracks or holes, sanding surfaces smooth, cleaning walls to remove grease or residue, and applying the right primer or base coat for the surface and paint you're using. On older properties in Portsmouth, where you often find layers of old paint built up over decades, this stage can take as long as the painting itself.

It's not the glamorous part of the job. But it's the part that makes everything else work.

When I quote for a job, I always include proper preparation in the price. I'd rather be upfront about what something costs than cut the quote and cut the prep.
