How to Choose the Right Paint Finish for Every Room in Your Home

If you've ever stood in a decorating shop staring at the difference between matt, eggshell, and satin and wondered what it actually matters… you're not alone. It's one of the most common questions I get asked on a first visit, so here's a straightforward guide.

Matt is flat and non-reflective. It's great for ceilings and low-traffic rooms like bedrooms because it hides imperfections well. The downside is it's harder to wipe clean, so it's not ideal anywhere that gets grubby hands on it.

Eggshell has a very slight sheen and is much more durable. It's my go-to recommendation for living rooms, hallways, and anywhere with a bit of traffic. It cleans up easily and still looks smart.

Satin is a step up in sheen again. It’s good for kitchens and bathrooms where moisture is a factor, and excellent for woodwork like skirting boards and door frames.

Gloss is the most durable and the most reflective. It's mostly used on woodwork and metal. It does show imperfections more, so the prep work underneath matters.

The honest answer is there's no single right choice. It depends on the room, the surface, and how much wear it'll get. If you're not sure, that's exactly the kind of thing I talk through on a first visit before quoting. No obligation, just a straight conversation.
