Choosing a Painter and Decorator in Portsmouth: What to Look For

There's no shortage of decorators in Portsmouth, so how do you know who to trust with your home?

Here's what I'd look for, based on 40 years in the trade.

Insurance. Any professional decorator should have public liability insurance. Don't be afraid to ask for evidence of it before work starts.

A proper quote. A good decorator will want to see the job before quoting. Be cautious of anyone who gives you a price over the phone without asking any questions. They're either guessing or planning to add costs later.

References or reviews. Word of mouth has been the backbone of my business for four decades. Ask if they have previous customers you can speak to, or look for Google reviews that mention specific details rather than just generic praise.

Clear communication. Do they answer the phone? Do they get back to you promptly? How someone communicates before the job is usually a good indicator of how they'll behave during it.

No pressure. A tradesperson confident in their work won't pressure you into a decision. Get a quote, take your time, and make sure you're comfortable before anyone picks up a brush.

I've built my business in Portsmouth entirely on repeat customers and referrals. If you'd like to talk through a job, big or small, I'm always happy to come and take a look.
